Robusta output is mainly concentrated in the highland provinces: Binh Phuoc, Daklak, Gia Lai. In which, key districts/communes include:

3. Characteristics of Robusta coffee trees

Cà phê Robusta là gì?

Robusta coffee is a shrub or small tree, which can grow from 4.5 to 6.5 meters high when planted and cared for, but in natural conditions can reach 10 meters. The tree has a wide, dense canopy, creating good shade.

Leaves, flowers and fruits:

- Leaves: Robusta coffee leaves are oval or elliptical, larger than Arabica leaves, dark green, smooth leaf surface.

- Flowers: Robusta flowers are small, white, grow in clusters in the leaf axils. Flowers have a light fragrance, not as strong as Arabica flowers.

- Fruit: Robusta fruits are round or short oval, when ripe they are bright red or dark red. Each fruit contains two coffee beans.

Popular Robusta coffee varieties:

Robusta does not have as many varieties as Arabica. However, some popular Robusta varieties in Vietnam and the world include:

- Robusta Ineac: High-yielding Robusta variety, good disease resistance, commonly grown in Vietnam.

- Robusta Conillon: Robusta variety originating from Brazil, smaller beans but higher caffeine content.

- Robusta Nganda: Robusta originated from Uganda, large beans, good quality, often used to produce instant coffee.

Growing and care conditions:

- Altitude: Robusta coffee trees adapt well to altitudes below 1000 meters above sea level.

- Climate: The tree prefers hot and humid climates, average temperatures from 24-30°C, high rainfall.

- Soil: Robusta is not picky about soil, can be grown on many different types of soil, including poor soil.

- Care: Robusta coffee trees are more resistant to pests and diseases than Arabica, easier to grow and care for.

However, attention should still be paid to watering, fertilizing, pruning and pest control for the best growth of the tree. Robusta coffee, also known as Vối coffee, brings a completely different taste experience compared to Arabica. If Arabica is likened to an elegant, sophisticated lady, Robusta is a strong, individual and energetic man.

Characteristic flavor:

- Long aftertaste: The bitter taste of Robusta lingers in the mouth for a long time, creating a feeling of refreshment and long-lasting alertness.

- Aroma: The aroma of Robusta is not as diverse and complex as Arabica. The aroma is often described as earthy, woody, cereal or sometimes with a hint of dark chocolate and caramel.
